I produce strange and happy painting from the edge of the White Peak, inspired by the magic of nature and the beings of legend still striding the land. The subject matter is an indiscriminate hodgepodge of folklore and imagery I absorbed over the course of my early life and which now tumble out of me like forgotten languages jumbled together into glorious nonsense.
I am self-taught and have no formal training as an artist. I work mostly in acrylics, painting on canvas board and salvaged wood, and in traditional drawing media. I have also been known to dabble in leftover household emulsion. My work is characterised by vibrant colours, dreamy subject matter and boggly eyes.
My work has illustrative qualities and suggests a narrative, though I rarely set out to specifically illustrate a story. I try to tap into a more collective folklore, putting my own twist on motifs that I hope will ring a bell in many minds yet remain elusive enough for the viewer to create their own narrative. My work is always warm and reflects my love of my native mythology and the many cultures that have contributed to the tapestry.
I live in mighty Macclesfield, from whence I enjoy wandering the Peak District and scampering up hills.
